Volunteer wins award

Beth Deakin, a student volunteer, who clocked up 44 hours with the Goldthorpe group has won the WEA Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Regional Award for Best Volunteer. Nominated for the national awards  Beth went to the  WEA Making a Difference Parliamentary Event and Awards ceremony in London on the 7th November to collect her prize. Beth also attended the Yorkshire and Humber AGM in Leeds on Saturday 24th November. She said that volunteering on the archaeology project had given her ‘valuable teaching skills which had led to her recently getting a job supporting young people’. ‘The WEA has completely changed the direction of my life’.

Jill Iles, the WEA support worker at Goldthorpe, also won the regional Yorkshire and Humber WEA Award for Best  Support Worker.
